Commission moves to publish budget at 48.4 mills; budget hearing set for Aug. 20

County staff presented the proposed 2027 budget and recommended publishing at a 48.4 mill levy, which staff said would levy about $14,125,007.94 in property taxes. The budget presenter emphasized multi-year efforts to reduce the mill levy from a 2022 level of 56.891 mills and outlined where previous reductions produced cumulative property-tax savings.

The presenter also summarized operational changes that contributed to the budget: three budgeted positions eliminated (dispatch down two, appraiser office down one) and consolidation in public works leading to the equivalent of four fewer positions overall. Commissioners discussed whether to restore a $10,000 conservation-district allocation (staff currently shows $30,000 versus $40,000 in prior years); staff said they would review revenues and consider an adjustment before publishing. The county plans to publish the budget at 48.4 mills and hold the budget hearing on Aug. 20.
