Sherman senior center adopts limited wheelchair-lift transportation policy

The Sherman Senior Center will begin offering limited transportation for residents who require a wheelchair lift, the commission heard at its June 15 meeting. The new policy, approved by First Selectman Don Lowe, allows the center to provide rides when other resources are unavailable, provided the service does not interfere with center programming.
The written report submitted by Suzette Berger spells out program rules: appointments must be arranged at least one week in advance and “each client must be accompanied by a caregiver/personal assistant able to assist the client to and from the senior bus.” Drivers will attach required safety straps and operate the lift but will not leave the vehicle to escort clients. Berger noted driver availability is a challenge and recommended considering training FISH volunteers to obtain the necessary license endorsement. Commissioners discussed potential client numbers and operational hurdles and asked for a status update in six months to evaluate feasibility.
