The Manhattan Beach City Council opened its July 21 meeting with ceremonial recognitions for MiraCosta High School athletic programs, presenting certificates of recognition and commemorative city pins to coaches and representatives of several CIF Southern Section championship teams.
Council members walked attendees through a series of presentations honoring the girls beach volleyball, girls cross country, boys baseball, boys indoor volleyball, boys lacrosse and boys track-and-field teams. "They were wonderful girls...this is only the third time that girls cross country has won CIF, so it's pretty special," a coach said during brief remarks. Council members thanked coaches by name and invited photos with the mayor and mayor pro tem.
The mayor also acknowledged a temporary retirement announced that evening for longtime cross-country head coach Renee (who was praised for dedicating significant time to the program). The council closed the ceremonial section and moved on to the regular agenda after brief applause and photographs.
