Traffic commission to re-study Silver Street speeds after new data

The Marion Traffic Commission reviewed a newly compiled set of speed studies and agreed to re-examine Silver Street following data suggesting drivers reach speeds near 35 mph in a short distance between stop signs.
Commission staff presented counts and recommended retesting one location (West Washington) where equipment anomalies may have affected results. The commission said it would coordinate with the engineering and street departments to repost equipment and then reassess whether a 25 mph limit is warranted on Silver Street, given nearby schools, bus stops and pedestrian activity.
Commissioners noted the device locational choices affect results and that physical conditions (street width, parked cars, and railroad tracks) differ along the corridor. Councilman Scott Bridal, who helped compile data, said the new information provides a basis to consider regulatory change, but asked members to allow time for a technical review before drafting an ordinance.
