The Public Utilities Committee voted to draft a resolution opposing a transmission-related rate increase filed by FirstEnergy/Ohio Edison and to send the measure to full council for consideration.
The law director told the committee the filing covers transmission lines and applies statewide in FirstEnergy service areas, including Marion. He described the filing as a resubmission of infrastructure-related funding tied to emergency planning after a major blackout about a decade ago. “1st Energy has filed for a rate increase… This is a rate increase associated with the transmission lines,” the law director said.
Committee members pressed for clarification of the customer impact after a summary line in the filing was read inconsistently. One member said the document’s sentence that estimated “approximately $4.26” was ambiguous about whether the amount was per month or per year. The law director and others agreed to treat that line as monthly while they confirm the firm calculation before finalizing the drafted resolution.
Chair (the presiding member) moved the committee to instruct staff to prepare a resolution opposing the filing and place it on the council agenda; the motion was seconded and recommended to full council.
Next steps: staff will draft the resolution with the clarified monthly/annual impact figures and, if finalized by the Thursday deadline, present it to full council for a vote.
