County Executive Mark Elrich said the county council’s economic committee approved a bill to impose an 18‑month moratorium on the review of data‑center proposals, a measure he compared to a six‑month moratorium on data‑center permits he signed earlier.
"This morning, the council econ committee approved the bill to create an 18 month moratorium on the review of data centers," Elrich said, and added that the moratorium would cover the currently proposed Dickerson data center. He said Council President Nade Fani Gonzalez selected the economic committee to lead the work and that the bill will go to full council for a work session and action on Tuesday, July 28. Elrich also said the county’s planning, housing and parks committee will consider ZTA 26‑01 to establish clearer definitions and limits on data centers in the county.
Elrich framed the work as necessary to ensure any future data‑center approvals do not harm local energy resources or the environment and said he hopes the council will use the moratorium and zoning work to produce enforceable standards.
