Monroe County approves treated salt contract with Midwest Salt LLC for 2026–27 season

Monroe County commissioners approved a contract July 23 with Midwest Salt LLC to secure treated road salt for the upcoming season. The agreement (fund 1169) commits the county to a purchase amount read into the record as $286,150 with a minimum take of 80% of the specified tonnage and a maximum of 100%.
Highway staff explained why committing ahead of winter is prudent: even mild winters with multiple skiff events can consume substantial material and supply and logistics tightness in season can make sourcing difficult. "We did have an issue getting solved, 25, 26 winter... I just wanna make sure we have some options," the highway representative said. Staff noted the county also approved untreated salt and brining systems earlier and that treated salt orders help fill storage capacity. Commissioners approved the contract by voice vote and thanked highway staff for preparing the bid and storage plan.
The board instructed staff to proceed with contract execution and to monitor inventory and usage over the season; the agreement allows the county flexibility if winters prove unusually mild.
