Council backs Chieftain Park playground redesign and authorizes staff to order equipment

Recreation Commission Director Brad Echols presented a months‑long design process for Chieftain Park that responds to a public survey and adds accessibility and inclusive features. Echols said the new layout expands play equipment within the park footprint by relocating swings, adding climbing structures (including a 24‑foot net), doubling slides, installing a 0‑entry merry‑go‑round and using a turf safety surface rather than mulch. He also described shade additions, transfer stations for wheelchair access and a fence along the parking lot to deter runouts.
Staff reported that the city has executed a contract with GameTime (doing business as Cunningham Recreation) and that equipment should be ordered by November to meet an installation window that could allow completion by late February or March, weather permitting. Council moved and unanimously approved a motion directing staff to assist the Recreation Commission with ordering equipment.
