The Waukesha City Cemetery Commission unanimously approved a proposal from the Friends of Prairie Home Cemetery to place a monument in the newer veteran area (Section 8) and to install solar-lit flagpoles in both the newer and original veteran sections.
Cemetery Director Karen described the project and referenced a packet photo and map. She said the proposed monument has a granite base and "stands about 4 feet tall," and that the proposed flagpoles would likely be about 20 feet. The Friends group told commissioners it has already voted to fund the monument, flagpoles, solar lights and flags.
Commission members and volunteers discussed siting near an existing pergola used for military honors; volunteers, including a local Boy Scout troop, offered to help with planting and flagpole work. A motion to approve placement of the monument and solar-lit flagpole in the newer veteran section and a solar-lit flagpole in the original veteran section, funded by the Friends group, was moved, seconded and passed unanimously.
The commission did not attach additional conditions beyond the funding commitment from the Friends group; staff will proceed with design details and placement planning in coordination with volunteers and the Friends organization.
