City highlights adaptive inclusion specialist that helps keep children with IEPs in before/after school and summer programs

Gayla Evers, Recreation Supervisor, described the adaptive inclusion specialist role that supports students with individualized education plans (IEPs) across the city’s before- and after-school and summer programming. "Our adaptive inclusion specialist... is able to go into our before and after school, work with our staff, work with the individual children to make sure that they are successful and that they can participate in our before and after school programs," Evers said, noting this is a part-time position that reaches 11 before/after school sites and about nine summer day camp locations.
Evers said roughly 30% of the student population in these programs have identified education plans and that the specialist helps staff adapt supports within ratio constraints (about 1:10–1:12) so programs remain affordable for families and inclusive for students with diverse needs. The committee was told the position is a small portion of the CDBG program request but a critical element in sustaining inclusive programming.
