Superintendent says WIAA enacted rule changes and fines without local consultation

Superintendent Pete Peterson told the Kiona‑Benton City School District board that the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association recently implemented changes and “began imposing fines on coaches, teams and districts,” and that district leaders were not consulted before the changes took effect. He said the matter has progressed to attorneys and that he will attend a WIAA meeting to get more information.
Pete Peterson said the changes were discussed internally at roughly the same time a proposal to expand school memberships did not move forward. “The WIAA recently made some changes that they did not discuss with principals or superintendents,” Peterson said. Director Teddy Bryan asked whether the rules were longstanding; Peterson replied that the matters trace to WIAA bylaws and that legal counsel is now involved. Peterson told the board he will keep members updated after the meeting with WIAA officials.
