La Center Middle School reports IEP gains, emphasizes culture of belonging

Dave McIntosh, an administrator for La Center Middle School, told the district board on March 11 that the school’s School Improvement Plan (SIP) is focused on both academic intervention and social-emotional supports. He said the plan’s main goal is to "create a strong culture of hope for learning and belonging at La Center Middle School."
McIntosh described tiered academic interventions that include monthly staff professional development, weekly collaboration time, inclusionary classes in math and English language arts, and internal WIN time to support students who are behind. He said counselor "push-in" lessons are provided across grade levels and cover digital citizenship, anti-bullying and suicide prevention.
On academic measures, McIntosh reported that seven of nine students on individualized education programs (IEPs) showed positive growth on STAR testing between fall and winter. He said the school established tiered interventions that have led to nine students being removed from IEPs and that four additional students are potentially on track to be removed pending continued progress.
McIntosh also described school-climate surveying administered in fall and spring and said, overall, students report feeling like they belong and feel supported. Because the meeting was a workshop, the board took no formal action on the SIP at the session, which adjourned at 6:37 p.m.
