Elections staff to mail permanent vote-by-mail application and add second processing station to cut lines

Carrie, speaking for the county elections office, told the committee the office is preparing a countywide mailing that will deliver an application for permanent vote-by-mail to registered voters who have not previously opted in or out.
"This is an application for permanent vote by mail to each registered voter within the county that has not previously opted in or out of receiving a permanent vote by mail ballot as indicated on the form," Carrie said. She reminded residents that write-in filings are accepted in the office through Sept. 3 and that the hearing for the list of election judges is scheduled for Aug. 25 at 9 a.m. in Room 223 with a notice to publish July 23.
To reduce wait times during early voting, Carrie said the office is working to add a second voter processing station in the early voting room in the basement, staffed by a total of five judges (two at each station and one floater). "We are hoping this will create a shorter wait time in the line and a quicker processing time," she said.
Carrie also described budget items for the elections office, including modest increases in publications and supplies and a planned purchase of an ionizer and dehumidifier for the basement election room because of damp conditions.
The committee asked staff to re-run any mileage-related budget projections after an IRS mileage-rate increase to ensure appropriations reflect the new standard mileage amount.
