Residents, police back ordinance to prohibit public display of kratom, nitrous and similar products

The board reviewed a petitioned warrant article and proposed ordinance aimed at prohibiting the public display or sale solicitation of certain psychoactive substances, including kratom and nitrous, which proponents say are being sold in convenience stores in forms that differ from traditional plant products. Proponent Erik Becker told the board he has seen concerning availability locally and said removing display loopholes was prudent while the State evaluates the issue.
Police Chief Jon Woodworth said officers have encountered people who used nitrous or kratom and described behavior-altering effects that complicate response. Becker added that a Bridge Street store removed the products from display after learning about the proposed ordinance. The item is slated for a March 10 Town Meeting vote.
