Select Board approves updated bicycle ordinance adding e-bikes and scooters

Select Board Chair Shane Beattie opened a public hearing on proposed updates to the town’s 1991 bicycle ordinance that would add scooters, electric scooters and e-bikes to the ordinance and extend the required dismount zone from Mechanic/Elm Street to Church Street and the north end of School Street. Resident Adam Adair asked whether there was data supporting that extended dismount zone and noted the draft does not yet reference rollerblades or hoverboards.
After discussion about child safety on sidewalks and the omission of rollerblades and hoverboards, Selectman Leon Rideout moved and Selectman Kathy-Jean Lavoie seconded a motion to approve the Bicycle Ordinance “as presented.” The motion carried unanimously. The board said they could amend the ordinance later to explicitly include hoverboards or rollerblades if needed.
