Board: Epic Flight Academy agrees to mandatory noise-abatement for students

The New Smyrna Beach Airport Advisory Board heard an update on voluntary noise-abatement efforts Oct. 27, with staff reporting that Epic Flight Academy has agreed to require its students to follow airport-recommended noise procedures.
Arvin told the board the airport met with Epic on Aug. 6, Sept. 9 and Oct. 15 to review compliance and that Epic “accounts for, you know, 85% probably of the activity at the airport.” He said the school has agreed to make voluntary noise-abatement practices mandatory for students so the company can “hold themselves accountable and we review that activity together.”
Board members and a nearby resident, speaking from Inlet Shores, said they have noticed improvements compared with earlier in the year. The board noted there are still monthly fluctuations in operations, and Arvin said the airport will continue outreach and monitoring.
Why it matters: Epic’s cooperation affects the majority of traffic at the field and is therefore the primary lever the airport has to reduce localized noise impacts. The board asked staff to keep monitoring trends and to report at the quarterly safety update.
What’s next: Staff will continue to meet with Epic and include noise-abatement data in future quarterly reports to the board.
