The American Legion WW Manning Post 32 asked the Carlin City Council on Dec. 11 to reduce or eliminate its monthly water bill for its post at 141 S. 6th St., arguing the current cost constrains the post’s ability to fund scholarships, holiday lighting and maintenance of public spaces. “Our $61.42 monthly water bill limits our ability to fund these efforts,” Rick Gillespie said during the meeting.
Mayor Dana Holbrook said he appreciated the Legion’s community contributions but warned that granting free water could create a precedent other nonprofits might seek to follow. Councilperson Denise Taylor noted that military-affiliated 501(c)(19) organizations differ from standard nonprofits and said she would support an exemption in recognition of veterans’ service. Vice Mayor Margaret Johnston also voiced support for assisting veterans. The council did not take action and indicated the request would return as a properly formatted agenda item for further consideration.
