Council approves up to $30,000 purchase of mini-excavator for Public Works

The Carlin City Council approved the Public Works Department’s purchase of a mini-excavator with a maximum purchase price of $30,000. Public Works Foreman Joe Massa said the department’s current backhoe is too large for several maintenance tasks—particularly in the city cemetery where it risks damaging historic headstones—and that a smaller excavator would increase efficiency and reduce that risk.
City Manager Richard Braithwaite said funding would come from recent vehicle-sale proceeds ($12,400) and existing budget reserves ($17,600). Margaret Johnston moved to approve the purchase and Lyndsie Whigham seconded; the motion passed.
The equipment was approved for multi-use within public works operations including alleyway repairs and utility work.
