District food‑service staff gave the board an overview of meal requirements and how upcoming federal changes will affect menus. The nutrition presenter explained component and calorie rules — for example, elementary breakfasts must fall between 350 and 500 calories — and said the district must also meet stricter sodium thresholds and an added‑sugar limit that will soon take effect.
"For instance, breakfast at the elementary school, each meal has to be between 350 and 500 calories," the nutrition presenter said, and noted that chocolate milk currently contains about 14 grams of added sugar per 8‑ounce serving, which exceeds a proposed 10‑gram added‑sugar limit per 8‑ounce unit. Staff are testing new, lower‑sugar products and working on product formulation statements so items meet federal meal requirements yet remain palatable for students.
The presenter also highlighted participation statistics and operational details: the district is serving roughly 2,064 lunches in October at one point in the presentation and reported lunch participation rates around 63% at some sites with lower breakfast participation (about 31%). Staff described outreach ideas (taste tests, in‑class nutrition talks) to increase breakfast uptake. The board discussed reimbursement rules and product sourcing; no policy change was enacted during the meeting.
