Council reviews proposed shared city attorney contract; maternity leave provisions debated

In a work-session review following the public meeting, councilors examined a draft agreement to share attorney services between Nephi City, the Juab School District, and Central Valley Medical Center under attorney Brittany Tellez.
Seth Atkinson explained that state legislation does not cover city attorneys under governmental immunity and that Brittany is employed by the school district and thus is covered. The draft agreement outlines scope of duties, cost sharing, wages, benefits, dispute resolution, termination and other standard terms.
Council discussion focused in part on maternity leave: Tellez is currently taking 12 weeks, the school district offers five weeks, and councilors said that as a district employee the contract should follow the district’s five-week standard. Sara Samuelson said the city currently lacks a maternity-leave policy and urged that the city adopt one.
No final contract decision was recorded in the public minutes; the matter was part of the closed/work-session discussion.
