Council hears updates on proposed data center: noise ordinance, annexation, and water use addressed
Summary
City staff reported a May 13 planning commission noise-ordinance hearing for a proposed data center, said the ordinance will be reviewed June 10, and noted an annexation request with a future public hearing. Councilor Travis Worwood asked about water use; City Administrator Seth Atkinson said the first phase would use less water than some existing industrial customers. Mayor Seely denied that an armory was built for data-center security.

Nephi City staff updated the council May 19 on several items tied to a proposed data center and related community concerns.
Seth Atkinson said a noise-ordinance public hearing concerning the data center was held May 13 at the planning commission and that the ordinance will be reviewed again at the June 10 meeting before coming to council. He also said land has been requested for annexation for the data center and that a public hearing will be scheduled. Councilor Travis Worwood asked whether studies had compared industrial businesses’ water usage with the proposed data center; Atkinson said the project’s first phase would use less water than some established industrial customers.
Mayor Justin D. Seely addressed what he called misinformation linking the nearby armory base to data-center security. Seely said the military chose the site to move away from the Wasatch front fault line and that the armory’s current presence reflects changing administrative plans rather than a security facility for the data center.
Councilors were told additional review and public hearings will precede any annexation or ordinance action; the planning commission’s June 10 review was identified as the next step on the noise-ordinance item.
