Committee hears proposal for county purchase of 6-acre parcel next to Lady's Island Middle School

Members of the legislative committee were briefed on a possible county purchase of a 6-acre undeveloped parcel on Sea Island Parkway west of Cougar Drive, immediately adjacent to Lady's Island Middle School. The Green Space Advisory Committee discussed the site and the county indicated interest in acquiring the land.
"It is a 6 acre plot of forest... It is for sale for $2,200,000," a committee member reported, describing potential park uses such as informal gatherings, a farmers market and outdoor concerts. County staff and the committee noted traffic and access concerns; the county engineer has considered restricting turning movements on Cougar Road and the Department of Transportation may need to approve any changes.
Committee members noted the district's capital referendum funds are already committed—"we have $444,000,000, but every dime of that is committed"—and said the district is not being asked to purchase the land. Members agreed to add the item to the upcoming full-board work session so the board can weigh whether to accept a deed or pursue a school–county use arrangement if the county purchases the property.
If the county proceeds, committee members said the district could use the land under a use agreement with fee and insurance arrangements to limit district costs and liabilities.
