Legislative committee to proactively track bills affecting Beaufort County schools

The Beaufort County Board of Education legislative committee said it will take a proactive approach to monitoring state legislation that could affect local schools, asking members to review pre-filed bills and rank priorities ahead of the district work session.
"We want to be proactive to actually search for things or efforts or proposed amendments or actions that can affect public schools," the Chair said, urging members to use provided packets and to return rankings by the requested deadline. The committee asked staff to provide paper binders with house and senate pre-file bill packets to each member.
Committee members were instructed to submit short bullet titles—rather than paragraphs—so staff can aggregate priorities for the April 25 work session and the full board. The committee discussed using a digital voting step after members submit priorities to reduce roundtable debate during aggregation.
The committee also affirmed that staff should circulate three core documents (pre-file bills, the SC School Board legislative update and the legislative items list) so members can follow bill status and provisos. The committee set a follow-up schedule and targeted May legislative meeting dates for further discussion.
