Historical Society presents capital needs after large estate gifts; asks for continued county support

Larry Gatzinger, treasurer of the Grant County Historical Society, and Patty Benson, the society’s curator, briefed the county on museum operations, recent donations and upcoming capital projects. Gatzinger said the society typically budgets about $60,000 in revenue and had received two large estate gifts in recent years — an approximately $124,000 gift and an earlier $70,000 gift — that enabled roof repairs and an expansion effort. "Typically, if you will see our proposed revenue is about 60,000 and you're paying 32,000 of that and that basically covers Patty's salary," Gatzinger said.

The presenters described completed and planned capital work: a Quonset roof repair estimated at about $23,000, Stone Bridge repairs at about $17,000, and a planned insulated 200‑sq‑ft Quonset addition with new concrete and HVAC that they estimated could cost roughly $80,000. They also outlined a collections‑management pilot supported by a $5,400 grant to inventory artifacts and make parts of the collection discoverable online. The board received the presentation for information and did not take an immediate funding vote; commissioners thanked the society and set no formal motion.
