Parks & Rec reports registration growth, reschedules Special Olympics softball tournament

Barren County Parks & Recreation told the Fiscal Court that registration for its NFL flag football league rose from 70 athletes last year to 178 this year, generating $11,115 in registration fees for that league and contributing to a broader parks revenue total of $50,181.25 for June, officials said.
Parks staff also announced the 2nd annual Special Olympics softball tournament — postponed by weather on July 12 — has been rescheduled to Sunday, Aug. 23 at 2:00 PM, with 12 teams registered statewide. Parks & Rec asked the public to support that event and noted fall registration will open soon. Officials said the 2027 Kentucky High School Athletic Association decision to make flag football an accredited girls sport is likely to increase female participation and community interest in coming seasons.
