Council orders cleanups, gives owners time in multiple condemnation hearings

At 308 South Van Zorn staff reported compliance and the council closed that matter. For 400 North Perkin (Herpen), multiple council members and the city attorney described trailers, chickens and unserviceable vehicles on the property and concluded the parcel was not in compliance with the zoning ordinance. City Attorney Woody recommended sending a 30-day notice to clear the property; council members voted to give the owner 30 days to remove trailers and poultry or the city will clear the property.
For 612 North West Veterans Memorial Drive the council found the property to be a hazard and approved staff recommendations to proceed. At 502 North Frederick Avenue, inheritor Hilton Shello asked for more time to remove debris and said he would begin demolition on August 4; the council agreed to extend the compliance deadline to October and will revisit progress at the November meeting.
Council members emphasized communication with owners, a clear checklist for what 'clean' means, and the need for staff to notify owners before the city removes material.
