The Village Board voted to hire Safe Step Safe Sidewalk Solutions for $5,000 to begin sidewalk repairs in 2026, focusing on the most hazardous lips and trip hazards. Director of Public Works Leitzinger told the board that many neighboring communities start with a $5,000 commitment and that Safe Step grinds dangerous lips and recommends full replacement where grinding is insufficient.
"Most towns start with a $5,000 commitment," Leitzinger said, describing the program's typical approach. President Robert McLimans noted the draft 2026 budget includes roughly $10,000 for sidewalk repair and proposed committing half of that to try the Safe Step program. The motion to hire Safe Step carried unanimously.
Leitzinger agreed to develop a plan identifying which sidewalk segments could be eliminated entirely and to return with cost estimates for removal or full replacement as needed. The board also approved a separate $1,500 repair to the sidewalk lip near the Legion building during the same meeting.
