Avondale Estates police: violent crime remains low; DUI arrests rose after new traffic unit started

Chief Hess described efforts to clarify classifications and educate the public about reporting.
Chief Hess said the department started a swing‑shift traffic unit and hired an officer with extensive DUI detection experience; "Of the 14 DUI arrests that we've made this year, he accounts for 7 since he started in February," the chief said. The chief added that other officers attended impaired‑driving training and the department plans continuing roadside impairment classes to address alcohol and drug‑related driving risks. Staff said the department will provide an updated six‑month report after the next period to highlight seasonal trends and per‑capita comparisons if requested.
