Council OKs change allowing public service aides to issue certain traffic citations

Rio Rancho approved on second reading an amendment to the municipal traffic code that gives non-sworn public service aides (PSAs) authority, under written directive of the police chief, to issue citations for enforcement of specific quality-of-life provisions, such as parking and registration violations.
Captain Cascati, presenting the item, said the PSA program began in 2018 and has expanded. "Those PSAs have responded so far in the first half of the year 1,153 calls for service, 512 of those were disabled unattended vehicles, and 29 were public nuisance calls," he told the governing body, arguing the change would let PSAs mitigate certain calls and increase quality of life. The council moved, seconded and approved the ordinance on a unanimous roll call.
