Shawano BID coordinator advises 'start with the small things' as Bonduel readies downtown plan

Lindsay Johnson, Coordinator of the Shawano Downtown Business Improvement District, told the Village of Bonduel Redevelopment Authority on Oct. 14 that downtown turnarounds often begin with modest, visible steps. "Start with the small things such as flowers and to ask businesses to host watering the flower pots," Johnson said, describing how Shawano moved from many vacant storefronts to renewed tenant interest.
Johnson urged the RDA to use the village's Master Plan or Downtown Redevelopment Plan as a long-term guide for projects and branding. RDA members present — including Chairman Russ Gehm, Sean Falk, Lisa Hughes and Brad Luepke — heard that consistent signage and coordinated aesthetics help attract tenants and visitors. Kristen Fish-Peterson, with Redevelopment Resources, told the board she expects a Downtown Revitalization Plan to be ready for review at the November meeting, meaning the RDA will soon have a more detailed roadmap for projects and funding.
