Representatives for Tashmoo Woods Condominium Association presented an update on possible nitrogen-mitigation strategies after the 2024 Nitrogen Regulations. Agent Doug Cooper described three options: building-level nitrogen-removing filters (NitROE or NITREX), relocating certain leaching fields outside the Lake Tashmoo watershed, or constructing a shoreline permeable reactive barrier (PRB) roughly 500 feet long, 10—12 feet deep and 4— feet wide filled with wood chips and lined with permeable geotextile fabric.
The Association said the PRB combined with targeted conventional upgrades could achieve approximately 50% nitrogen removal in the treatment zone, and they retained PRB expert Pia Lombardo to assist with feasibility and design. Board members expressed openness to the PRB concept but requested that the Association return within six months with more feasibility data, updated cost estimates, and a realistic implementation timeline before the current waiver expires at the end of 2026.
