Board adopts resolution opposing proposed Sutter Creek cannabis dispensary after public debate

The Amador County Unified School District board voted to adopt a resolution opposing a proposed cannabis dispensary in Sutter Creek after extensive public comment and trustee discussion.

Public speakers divided on the district’s role. Teacher Christy Melton urged the board to oppose the dispensary and said students hear district statements: "Our job is entirely to protect kids...We owe it to our kids to be the adults in the room who stand up and say, we're opposed to this," she told trustees. Public commenter Patricia Anjija queried the board’s jurisdiction and whether the board should instead engage the city council directly.

Trustees debated two approaches: supporting a specific resolution opposing the Sutter Creek project or adopting a broader statement reaffirming commitment to prevention, education and collaborative interventions. Trustee Shane proposed an alternative resolution focusing on prevention, education and collaboration; Trustee Peter and others argued a direct statement to the city was timely and appropriate before the city made a final decision. The board ultimately approved the specific resolution regarding the Sutter Creek dispensary by recorded vote (four yes, one no).

Trustees said the vote reflects the district's responsibility to protect students and to communicate its expectations to other local jurisdictions. The resolution will be forwarded to the City of Sutter Creek as the city considers the dispensary application.
