The Historic Resources Preservation Board on Oct. 8 approved a Certificate of Appropriateness allowing removable wooden steps at 128 North Ocean Breeze to address an accessibility concern raised by the homeowner. Preservation Planner Yeneneh Terefe told the Board the house’s semi-circular brick steps, semi-circular portico and shingle roof are character-defining features and that adding rectangular steps would harm the structure’s symmetry and not meet Historic Guidelines.
Applicant Debra Yates said the existing nine-inch rise is difficult to navigate and that friends have fallen, asking the Board for a lower riser: “Would like a 5-3/4 inch rise as opposed to the existing nine (9) inches.” The Board approved the project with conditions: the steps must be removable, curved in form, rise no more than 30 inches in height, and revert to the current condition if the property is sold. The motion was made by Edmund Deveaux, seconded by Laura Devlin, and carried unanimously by the members present.
