Diana Ipe, a doctoral student and MIND Institute intern, emphasized the genetic contributions to autism: “autism is primarily biologically important. So this means, theres it's rooted in genetics,” she said. She reviewed twin studies and genomic findings indicating many genes contribute to brain development and autism risk.
Ipe also discussed environmental research, noting a California study that looked at pesticide use around farms. She summarized the studys design—about 2,961 children with autism matched to roughly 35,300 controls—and said researchers reported small elevated risks associated with specific pesticides (single-study effect estimates shown on a slide were in the low teens percent range). She framed these findings as one piece of a complex puzzle and cautioned that genetic and environmental factors interact and that more research is needed.
