The Disability Advisory Committee on Monday hosted a Stop Stigma Sacramento presentation aimed at reducing stigma around mental health and directing people to local supports. David Da Silva, DAC vice chair, opened the virtual event and introduced Amelia Banes, a health educator who said the Stop Stigma project is funded through Proposition 63’s prevention and early intervention component.
Banes summarized prevalence and early-onset statistics — “1 in 5 adults” live with a mental illness, she said, and in Sacramento County that represents “over 300,000” people — and warned that stigma often delays care. "We want people to know that they're not alone," Banes said. The presentation included three lived-experience speakers who described treatment, workplace disclosure and paths to recovery. The session closed with a list of resources and materials to be shared in the meeting chat.
