Forest Park reports multiple sewer collapses, sinkholes and a water-main break; repairs likely costly

Public works staff reported three sinkholes, three major sewer digs and a water-main break in recent weeks; the village said repairs likely will run upwards of $10,000 per major sewer job and will be charged to the water fund, not the general fund.
Public works staff told the council the village has experienced a string of infrastructure failures that will require immediate repair work and draw from restricted utility funds.
"We've had 3 sinkholes, 3 major sewer digs, and a water main break today," said a public-works speaker, noting those events likely will require repairs costing "upwards of $10,000 each" because of old, collapsing infrastructure. Staff emphasized the costs will be charged to the water fund rather than the general fund and said the village is using reserves in restricted funds (water fund, VIP, MFT) to support those projects.
Councilors asked about timing and public impacts; staff said some repairs may last two to three weeks and advised the public to expect work zones, cones and temporary disruptions. Staff also highlighted a five-year refuse/recycling contract that produced savings this year and suggested sponsorships and partnerships to reduce event costs.
