Neighbors raise boundary concerns as board approves carport variance at 103 Mote Court

The Board of Adjustment approved a variance to allow a carport at 103 Mote Court to encroach toward the front property line, after staff and board members reviewed how setback averages were calculated for houses on Old Court. Staff explained that, although the variance had been described in one place as "22 and 0.5 feet," the relevant measurement for this proposal brings the structure to about a 12-foot setback when averaged with neighboring houses.
A neighbor who identified herself as Laurie Traister said she was representing her mother and asked the board to ensure the carport would not sit on their property. "We just wanna make sure that they're not setting it on our mother's property," Traister said. The property owners were not present. After closing the public hearing and confirming the application and plan drawings on file, the board moved and approved the variance by voice vote.
Board members discussed how the city averages neighboring setbacks to determine the baseline and noted that if the carport had been measured from the cul-de-sac point it could have been treated differently. Staff said they will follow up with the applicant to confirm exact placement and to ensure the structure meets the 5.5–6.5-foot clearance from the property line required by code.
