MCPS seeks warehouse and depot upgrades, highlights safety concerns at existing facilities

MCPS presented facility needs beyond schools: warehouse, maintenance depots and central offices. Staff said the existing warehouse in Rockville is dated—built from reclaimed World War II surplus materials—and is ill‑suited to serve a modern school system. The system prints diplomas, course guides and other materials there and currently relies on tractor trailers and off‑site storage.
As part of the CIP, MCPS has entered a lease for a larger consolidated warehouse at 750 Progress Way to centralize storage, printing and technology operations. Staff said the move will reduce operational costs and address safety and conditioning problems at the current site. MCPS also proposed two new bus depots on board‑owned properties (Dover Road and Wootton Elementary) to vacate the Shady Grove site and improve bus operations.
Committee members said they value the transparency and tours MCPS conducted and asked staff to include non‑recommended reductions and operational tradeoffs when they return to the committee.
