Wright Town Park Commission approves security camera and PA upgrade for promenade

The Wright Town Park Commission voted unanimously on July 21 to approve a resolution authorizing purchase of a security camera system and an upgrade to the park's public-address (PA) system, part of a capital budget item intended to improve emergency communications and coverage of the promenade.
"We have now received proposals from three qualified video security suppliers," Chance, the administrative aide for the town of Rye, said while introducing the recommended vendor and the proposal. Staff said the recommended option would extend camera coverage from Dearborn Avenue to Northgate and add audio capability to certain camera locations so the PA upgrade and video installation can be integrated.
Pete Chilio, park ranger captain, told commissioners the July 4 evacuation revealed shortcomings in the park's ability to reach people. "This new system will enhance our ability to do real time communication with the public," he said, adding the cameras would also help deter crime and preserve a record of incidents that could limit park liability.
Staff described the capital cost as approximately $17,467 with an annual operating cost of about $1,747. Commissioners discussed speaker placement to ensure PA coverage extends into nearby park areas as well as the beach; one commissioner estimated an additional exterior speaker could cost roughly $1,000.
During discussion the commission agreed to allow staff to include additional speakers if recommended by consultants and to keep the final purchase substantially consistent with the attached proposal. A motion to approve the resolution was moved, seconded and passed on a roll-call vote: Commissioner Jason Klein, Commissioner Keith Cunningham, Commissioner Josh Nathan, Commissioner Louie Marino and President Gary Zuckerman voted yes. Commissioner Lindsey Jackson was absent for the meeting.
Staff were authorized to execute any purchase orders or agreements substantially consistent with the proposal and to take actions necessary to carry out the resolution. The purchase will be integrated with existing police access to the system, staff said.
