Montgomery County proclaims Delta Sigma Theta Day, cites civic and scholarship work

The Montgomery County Council proclaimed Feb. 3 the 4th annual Delta Sigma Theta Day and recognized the Montgomery County and Potomac Valley alumnae chapters for community service and scholarship work.
Council President Natalie Fani Gonzalez read the proclamation, reciting the sorority’s founding date (Jan. 13, 1913) and national program priorities. Council members said the local chapters have led programs for seniors, health and wellness events, voter registration and scholarship fundraising, including an annual World AIDS Day breakfast and Martin Luther King Jr. Day of service.
“Ninas and Deltas are always purposeful, community driven and organized,” said Councilmember (speaker 4), who helped host the event, adding that the chapters have “fulfilled the mission” of the national organization in Montgomery County for decades.
Nina Abdul Wakil, president of the Montgomery County Alumnae Chapter, told the council the chapter was established in the county in 1970 and partners with the government on programs supporting youth through seniors. Daphne Paige Reeves, president of the Potomac Valley Alumni Chapter, noted her chapter was chartered on 04/27/1985 and stressed continuing work in western Montgomery County.
The proclamation was presented and photographed with honorees following brief remarks; council members said the chapters will continue as partners on county priorities.
