The board voted unanimously to award the July 2026 Yard of the Month prize to the second photo submission, after discussing two nominations presented during the July 22 meeting. Committee member 2 moved to award nomination No. 2 and Committee member 1 seconded; the motion passed by hand vote.
Staff described the judging criteria as maintenance, landscape design, use of seasonal plantings and overall impression and said the contest runs April through December, with up to two winners possible each month. "We only received two nominations for the month of July," the staff member said, noting that monthly winners receive a $50 gift card, a certificate of recognition signed by the mayor and a temporary yard sign placed in front of the property.
Committee members said the second submission demonstrated noticeably more effort. "I would vote for the second one and not the first," Committee member 1 said, and Committee member 2 said, "I make the motion to award it to number 2." The board recorded the award as unanimous.
The staff also said the city posts contest photos on its YouTube page and social media with the winners' permission. Members noted recent lower engagement compared with seasonal contests and encouraged outreach to increase participation in coming months.
