Sponsors seek added reporting on complaint outcomes and litigation tied to surveillance tech

Amendments proposed by Councilmember Lukey would expand the bill’s annual-reporting requirements to include outcomes of complaints and any pending or resolved litigation tied to county use of public safety technology. Mary Wellens explained the lead sponsors’ draft already required the executive to report on complaints, and Lukey’s changes would add a requirement to report on the outcomes so the council can better assess whether complaints were founded.
Lukey told the committee he wants investigators to record whether complaints were verified and how they were resolved: "Whether they are verified and founded to be accurate is another. And so, you know, we want to make sure there's an opportunity for people to raise concerns and complaints. We want to make sure they are investigated. But then if there's no there there, I think that's important for us as policy makers to know as well," he said. Staff also noted the amendment would require reporting on pending or resolved litigation related to the county's use of technology.
