Suwannee County sets tentative and final budget hearings and affirms millage rate

County finance staff recommended a tentative budget hearing on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 5:05 p.m. and a final hearing on Monday, Sept. 21 at 5:05 p.m. The board approved those dates. County staff also explained recent state legislation requiring local governments to set millage at the rollback rate by default; going above the rollback rate requires a 0.667 majority (four of five commissioners in this board) to begin the higher-rate process, and raising beyond that to the maximum would require unanimous approval.
"The rollback rate is defined as the rate that would generate the same amount of property taxes as approved for the prior year, less allowances for new construction, additions, deletions, annexations and improvements," Baker said. Commissioners voted to set the millage as presented and approved the hearing schedule. Staff will distribute budget books to commissioners and hold budget workshops on Aug. 5–6 ahead of the hearings.
