District outlines process behind distraction-free learning policy and safety staff training

At the July 22 board meeting, Dr. Hassler summarized how the district developed its response to the New York State "distraction-free" law and the resulting updates to the student and personal electronic device policy. She said the district convened a Distraction-Free Learning Committee in January 2025 composed of cabinet members, administrators, teachers, coaches, counselors, support staff, board members, parents and students to review the proposal and related research.
"The committee determined what the district's position was going to be, and they made a recommendation to the board of education," Dr. Hassler said, describing presentations to the board and materials posted in BoardDocs. She noted that the policy allows only medical or disability exemptions and that the law remains in effect for the 2026-27 school year.
Dr. Hassler also described ongoing professional development for school safety personnel, saying staff receive state-mandated trainings and supplemental trainings "around first aid and CPR and de-escalation training." She said those trainings are intended to "keep a very safe and secure environment for our students" and that the district will continue to review procedures to ensure compliance with the law while maintaining student health, safety and well-being.
The board did not take formal action on the policy at this meeting; Dr. Hassler said the district will continue to refine procedures and invited community input as implementation continues.
