Board votes to shift Madera County civil grand jury term to calendar year to ease recruitment

Regina Garza, County Counsel, told supervisors the court is having difficulty locating willing and qualified candidates for the county civil grand jury and requested the board consider converting the term from fiscal year to calendar year.
"The resolution would convert the grand jury's term from a fiscal to a calendar year," Garza said, explaining the court must panel 19 Madera County residents and that converting terms would mean no grand jury would be in session as of July 1 through Dec. 31, 2026 while the court recruits for 2027.
Board members discussed outreach and recruitment strategies; the chair and counsel noted the county's public-information team and outreach in the courthouse lobby have assisted recruitment. The board adopted the resolution and counsel said she would report back to the court and administration.
