Council approves John C. Fremont Days permit and fee waiver despite park readiness caveats

The council approved Resolution 2026-138 on June 9 to authorize use of city property, street closures and consideration of a fee waiver for John C. Fremont Days, the city's July festival. Michael Chatterton, city clerk, summarized the application and the committee's fee-waiver request (the standard fee for auditorium and outdoor arena use was listed at $4,125). The council approved the resolution and an additional fee waiver 8–0.

Connie Gossel, president of the John C. Fremont Days committee, said the organization remains committed to putting on the event and answered procedural questions about park space. Parks and Recreation Director Nick Canton told the council the project is "ready enough to have a festival" but warned some trim work and areas of sod might not be complete by July; staff will use fencing or temporary mats where needed to protect unfinished turf. "We might run into some smaller issues where some trim work might not be finished," Canton said, adding staff would coordinate with the committee to accommodate the event.

Council members expressed broad support for the festival and asked staff to continue communication with organizers while completing park work. With council approval, John C. Fremont Days may use the identified city property July 9–12 under the conditions and closures approved by the council.
