The district's athletics director and staff gave trustees a detailed presentation highlighting growth at the modified level, additional coaching hires, a new full-time athletic trainer and expanded programming aimed at both competitive and safety outcomes.
The athletics director said the district has instituted swim units across middle schools and added 9th–10th grade swim options while planning for 2nd-grade swim instruction and broader PE curriculum coherence. She told trustees the trainer "has been brilliant in the work that she's been doing" and noted the creation of an emergency action plan required for compliance.
On active-transportation programming, the director described a "learn to ride" elementary bike program that includes 24 bikes, pedal-conversion kits, helmets, a demonstration bike for teachers, curriculum resources and professional development. The district is exploring grants and coalition partners and hopes to run a pilot in the coming year that could rotate a small set of bikes among schools rather than require permanent storage.
Trustees asked about CPR and lifeguard certification for students; the director said expanded elective options could allow students to earn certification and that the district is working with partners to develop implementation timelines. The athletics staff also described a tutoring program for athletes requiring 45 minutes of after-school support and noted plans to increase intramurals and nontraditional sports if community interest and staffing support materialize.
