Planning commission studies driveway standards, weighs zoning vs. DPW roles

The Village of Suttons Bay Planning Commission on July 22 discussed a comprehensive review of driveway standards and whether some rules belong in the Zoning Ordinance or should be handled by the Department of Public Works. Steve reported that "he and Dave are doing a comprehensive study to determine what information/restriction (setbacks, widths, location) should be in the Zoning Ordinance and what should the DPW address (construction, safety and drainage)." The commission directed staff to return with recommended responsibilities after DPW coordination.
Commission member Sara noted the neighborhood and traffic-calming benefits of alley access for driveways, saying "driveways off alleys keep the traffic flowing, provide a neighborhood feel and assists with traffic calming." Commissioners also discussed grandfathering existing corner-lot driveways unless a major change occurs and considered removing district-specific language in Section 2-4(A)3 of the ordinance. No formal motion to amend the ordinance was made; Steve will present follow-up information at a later meeting.
