Unni Heineking told the Lake County commissioners during public comment that community members need to understand how euthanasia decisions are made and that the shelter should publish regular operational statistics. "I would like to, in the weekly report, hear how many dogs you currently have, how many dogs you in took this week, how many dogs got adopted out or transferred to another shelter or a rescue," she said.
The chair responded that recommendations can come from multiple sources — a veterinarian, the humane society or the dog warden — and that the commission will work toward a formal decision process and clearer communications from the shelter. The chair cautioned that publishing more walk-in hours or on-site viewing would have staffing implications and suggested online updates or a Facebook post as interim steps to increase visibility.
