St. Johns County explores ballot pathways for land-acquisition funding under LAMP

The Board heard a presentation from the Live Wildly Foundation and the Trust for Public Land examining funding pathways for land acquisition and conservation and asked county staff to work on potential ballot language.
"They're going to work with our staff on maybe some proposed ballot language that can be considered to be put on a future ballot for voters to consider maybe some funding opportunities," said Wayne Larson. The board discussed possible mechanisms such as sales-tax measures or ad valorem options that could generate revenue for the county's Land Acquisition and Management Program (LAMP).
Environmental staff described LAMP acquisitions since 2022 — including a 50-acre salt marsh, an 8-acre parcel in Elkton, a 3-acre kayak launch on Julington Creek, and Hawkins Island along the Matanzas River — and said staff focus on willing sellers and contiguous parcels to expand conservation corridors. County staff will coordinate with advisory volunteers and legal counsel while drafting any ballot proposals and will return to the board with options before any formal referral to the ballot.
